The measles situation in Mymensingh remains a serious concern, with another child dying while receiving treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital over the past 24 hours.
The child died at the hospital on Tuesday night, 8 September, bringing the total number of children who have died after being admitted with measles to 72.
The 10-month-old child, from Mymensingh Sadar, was admitted to the hospital on the night of 4 September after developing symptoms associated with measles. According to the doctor on duty, the child was also suffering from pneumonia, adding to the medical complications during treatment.
The latest death comes as the hospital continues to receive a substantial number of children with measles symptoms. Hospital authorities said 22 children were newly admitted to the isolation ward over the past 24 hours. During the same period, 19 children recovered sufficiently to return home.
As of the latest update, 93 children remain under treatment in the hospital’s isolation ward.
Hospital records show the scale of the pressure on the facility. Between 17 March and 8 September, a total of 3,983 children with symptoms of measles were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Of them, 3,818 have recovered and been discharged.
The figures indicate that the hospital has been dealing with a sustained flow of paediatric patients for several months. Although the number of children recovering and leaving the hospital remains high, new admissions continue to add pressure to the isolation ward and medical services.
The latest case also highlights the complications that can accompany measles. The 10-month-old child who died had pneumonia in addition to measles, according to the attending doctor. Such complications can make an already vulnerable child’s condition considerably more difficult to manage.
With 93 children still receiving treatment, hospital staff continue to face the challenge of caring for patients at different stages of illness. Some children are recovering and being discharged, while others are arriving with symptoms that require immediate medical attention.
The cumulative figures also show that the current situation cannot be viewed as a short-term increase in hospital admissions. Since 17 March, nearly 4,000 children have been admitted with measles symptoms, while 72 deaths have now been recorded among children treated at the hospital.
At the same time, the fact that 3,818 children have recovered and returned home provides an indication that many patients are responding to treatment. Nevertheless, the continuing arrival of new cases remains a concern, particularly when very young children develop additional complications such as pneumonia.
The hospital’s latest figures therefore present a mixed picture: a large number of children have recovered, but new admissions remain significant and the death toll continues to rise. With dozens of children still in the isolation ward, sustained medical care and close monitoring remain essential as the situation develops.
