Police have recovered the partially decomposed body of an unidentified teenager from a waterbody in Singair upazila of Manikganj district.
The body was recovered from among water hyacinths near Munshibari, locally known as Shahar Munshi’s house, in the Khaserchar Westpara area of Dhalla Union at around 4.30pm on Wednesday, 9 September.
Local residents said they first noticed a strong smell of decay around the waterbody at approximately 2pm. As the odour became more noticeable, several people began searching the surrounding area to determine its source.
Their search eventually led them to the rear of Shahar Munshi’s house, where they spotted what appeared to be a body floating among dense water hyacinths. The residents subsequently informed the police.
Officers from Singair Police Station went to the scene and recovered the body from the water. By that time, the body had undergone considerable decomposition and was visibly disfigured, making immediate identification impossible.
The deceased is believed to be a teenage boy, although his identity has not yet been established. Police are working to determine who he was and how he came to be in the waterbody.
Singair Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mazharul Islam confirmed the recovery. He said the body was being prepared for transfer to the morgue at Manikganj Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The post-mortem is expected to assist investigators in determining the circumstances and possible cause of death. Police are also examining whether the teenager died in an accident or was the victim of a deliberate killing.
At present, there is no official confirmation that the death was a homicide. Investigators are therefore considering the circumstances surrounding the discovery before reaching any conclusion.
The location of the recovery and the condition of the body have also made identification a priority for investigators. Establishing the teenager’s identity could help police determine where he came from, when he may have entered the waterbody and whether anyone had reported him missing.
The recovery has caused concern among residents of the area, particularly because the body was found in a waterbody close to a residential locality. Police have begun the necessary legal procedures and are continuing their investigation.
The body’s eventual identification, together with the findings of the post-mortem examination, is expected to provide crucial information about the teenager’s death. Until those findings are available, investigators are treating both accidental death and possible homicide as lines of inquiry.
