Erling Haaland struck twice as Manchester City defeated Porto 2–0 away from home in the Champions League, ending the Portuguese side’s hopes of producing a major upset on a night when they showed plenty of resilience but lacked the cutting edge required in the final third.
Porto had been regarded as one of the potential dark horses of this season’s competition, alongside clubs such as Como and Roma. Their prospects were strengthened by a competitive start under Francesco Farioli, while playing at the Estádio do Dragão offered another reason for optimism. Yet City’s greater attacking quality ultimately proved decisive, with Haaland once again demonstrating why he remains one of the most dependable goalscorers on Europe’s biggest stage.
The Norwegian forward could easily have opened the scoring in the first half. Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa produced three outstanding saves to keep him at bay and preserve a goalless scoreline at the interval.
One of Costa’s best interventions came when he reacted sharply to deny Haaland’s powerful header. The goalkeeper was also called upon to stop another promising City attack created through the understanding between Ayoub Bouaddi and Phil Foden.
City continued to control much of the attacking play, but Porto’s disciplined defending and Costa’s performance kept the hosts in the contest. Bouaddi, making his first start for City, impressed during the opening period, while Enzo Fernández also played an influential role in midfield.
The breakthrough arrived just two minutes after the restart. Fernández delivered a cross into the penalty area, and Haaland met it with a low header. The effort was not particularly powerful, but its direction wrong-footed Costa and the ball found the bottom corner.
The goal changed the rhythm of the contest. Porto responded with greater urgency and began putting City under sustained pressure. The visitors, meanwhile, appeared less secure than they had been before the interval.
Gianluigi Donnarumma was briefly exposed when an incident involving Pepe created what looked like a potential penalty situation. City were relieved when an offside decision ruled out the danger.
Porto came close again when a clearance from Donnarumma struck William Gomes. The deflection narrowly missed the post, providing another warning to the visitors as the hosts searched for an equaliser.
City had experienced a similar late wobble in their 1–0 victory over newly promoted Coventry on Saturday. This time, however, they avoided allowing the pressure to develop into a decisive problem.
Haaland settled the contest in stoppage time. Ryan Aït-Nouri supplied the cross, and the striker finished the move to make it 2–0. It was his 59th goal in 59 Champions League appearances, an extraordinary scoring record that underlines his consistency in the competition.
The second goal also carried personal significance for Haaland at club level. His tally for Manchester City reached 167 goals, moving him into third place on the club’s all-time scoring list.
The result also highlighted the continuing importance of Haaland to City under Enzo Maresca, who succeeded Pep Guardiola. The club invested a reported £460 million in new players, signalling an ambitious attempt to strengthen the squad. Yet despite the arrival of several expensive recruits, Haaland remains the central figure in the attack.
His form has shown little sign of slowing. After an impressive World Cup campaign with Norway, he entered the new season in similarly productive fashion, scoring five times in his first four matches.
Bouaddi’s introduction was another notable feature of the evening. The Moroccan teenager joined City from Lille for €100 million and was handed his first start. His composed display during the opening half suggested why the club invested heavily in his potential, although he remains behind Fernández and Elliott Anderson among City’s most expensive midfield acquisitions.
For Porto, the defeat will be frustrating. They managed to put City under pressure after the interval and created moments that could have changed the match, but they were unable to turn those opportunities into goals.
For City, the victory was ultimately built on patience and individual quality. Costa kept them waiting for almost an hour, Porto threatened a response after conceding, but Haaland’s finishing settled the contest. His two goals ensured that the English side left Porto with a valuable Champions League victory and another reminder of the Norwegian’s extraordinary efficiency at the highest level.
