Bangladesh’s public health infrastructure faces renewed strain as six more patients succumbed to dengue fever within 24 hours, taking the national death toll for the year to 139. Statistics released by the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room, operating under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), indicate that 1,492 new patients were admitted to healthcare facilities nationwide over the same period.

The total number of official hospitalisations since the start of the year has reached 48,430. While 44,857 individuals have successfully recovered and been discharged following treatment, the continuous influx of infected patients highlights an ongoing transmission cycle that shows little sign of slowing down.

Recent hospital admission trends demonstrate a noticeable geographic shift, with suburban and rural areas bearing a heavy burden. Khulna division recorded the highest number of fresh admissions in 24 hours, registering 284 cases. Non-corporation districts within the Dhaka division followed closely behind with 241 hospitalisations. Meanwhile, Chattogram division admitted 202 patients, Barishal registered 178, and Rajshahi recorded 122. Within the capital, hospital admissions remained split, with Dhaka North City Corporation reporting 151 cases and Dhaka South City Corporation logging 81. Admissions across Mymensingh, Rangpur, and Sylhet stood at 80, 54, and 13 respectively.

The vector-borne viral disease, transmitted primarily by the female Aedes aegypti mosquito, thrives during monsoon and post-monsoon periods when stagnant, clean rainwater creates ideal breeding grounds in urban drainage, discarded containers, and construction sites. The substantial rise in cases outside major metropolitan hubs underscores the widespread dispersal of mosquito breeding sites, requiring coordinated vector control operations beyond city municipal zones.

Public health professionals emphasize early detection and rapid fluid management to prevent severe complications, such as dengue haemorrhagic fever or plasma leakage leading to shock. Classic symptoms include high fever, severe headache, retro-orbital pain, muscle aches, and extreme fatigue. Health authorities advise members of the public to eliminate standing water around residential premises, utilize bed nets, and seek immediate medical evaluation rather than self-medicating when febrile symptoms occur.
