A motorcyclist was killed and another person was seriously injured after a passenger bus collided with their motorcycle in South Bijoypur area of Gournadi upazila in Barishal on Friday morning.
The accident took place at around 10.30am on the Dhaka-Barishal highway. The deceased was identified as Arafat Rahman Babu, 32, a resident of Ashokathi village in Gournadi.
According to eyewitnesses, a passenger bus operated by Tazbi Paribahan was travelling from Dhaka towards Kuakata when it collided with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. The impact caused both the motorcycle rider and passenger to be thrown onto the road, leaving them injured.
People in the area rushed to the scene after the crash and rescued the two injured men. They were taken to Gournadi Upazila Health Complex for treatment. However, doctors declared Arafat Rahman Babu dead after his condition was assessed.
The other injured man, identified as Asadul, sustained serious injuries in the collision. Given the severity of his condition, doctors referred him to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for further treatment.
The accident caused disruption and concern in the area as local people gathered at the scene following the collision. The incident also highlighted the risks faced by motorcyclists and other road users on the busy Dhaka-Barishal highway, where long-distance passenger buses and smaller vehicles travel along the same route.
Police later took both vehicles involved in the crash into custody. Officers are examining the circumstances surrounding the collision as part of the investigation.
Mohammad Mohsin Hossain, officer-in-charge of Gournadi Highway Police Station, confirmed that the bus and motorcycle involved in the accident had been detained. He said further legal action was being processed in connection with the incident.
The exact circumstances that led to the collision were not immediately established. Police are expected to take the necessary legal steps based on the findings of their investigation.
For the family of Arafat Rahman Babu, the crash has brought sudden loss. He was 32 and lived in Ashokathi village of Gournadi. Meanwhile, Asadul remains under medical care after being transferred to the Barishal medical college hospital for advanced treatment.
