Two passengers were killed and five others injured when a truck collided head-on with a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw in Mymensingh on Friday.
The accident occurred at around 12:30pm at the Akua Bypass intersection in Mymensingh city. All those killed and injured were travelling in the CNG-powered auto-rickshaw.
The deceased have been identified as Sonia, 30, from Jorbaria village in Fulbaria upazila, and Md Sadek Ali, 27, son of Abdul Khalek of Choudar village in the same upazila.
Sonia’s six-year-old son, Sajid, was among those injured and was reported to be in critical condition following the crash. The auto-rickshaw was carrying four passengers in addition to its driver, according to the information provided.
Al Amin, in-charge of the police camp at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, said Sadek Ali had been travelling to the hospital to visit a relative who was receiving treatment there.
Sadek had boarded a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw and was on his way to the medical college hospital when the vehicle reached the Akua Bypass intersection at about 12:30pm. It was then involved in a head-on collision with a truck.
The impact left the passengers with serious injuries. Sonia died at the scene. Local people rushed to the spot after the crash and helped rescue the injured before taking them to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Doctors at the hospital later examined Sadek Ali and declared him dead.
The five injured passengers were also taken to the hospital for medical attention. Among them was Sajid, whose condition was described as critical. Details of the other injured passengers were not immediately available.
Road crashes involving heavy vehicles and smaller passenger vehicles can result in severe injuries because of the difference in size and weight between the vehicles. Busy intersections and bypass areas can also see frequent movement of different types of vehicles, making careful driving and traffic management particularly important.
Police were informed of the accident shortly after it occurred. Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Shibirul Islam said officers were sent to the scene after receiving information about the collision.
He said legal proceedings in connection with the accident were under way.
The deaths have left relatives and local residents grieving, while the condition of the injured, particularly the six-year-old child, remains a major concern. Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision as part of the ongoing legal process.
