At just 15, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has already become a key concern for Afghanistan ahead of its T20I series against India. The teenage left-handed opener has attracted considerable attention with his performances, prompting the Afghan camp to prepare specifically for the challenge he could pose at the top of India’s batting order.
Afghanistan will face India in the opening match of the three-match T20I series, with Shreyas Iyer leading the Indian side. On the eve of the match, Afghanistan captain Ibrahim Zadran made it clear that Vaibhav’s age would not influence the team’s assessment of him. Instead, the Afghan side has been studying his batting through video footage while also drawing on the experience of teammates who have faced him in the Indian Premier League.
Zadran described Vaibhav as an “incredible talent” and said the young batter had already demonstrated his ability at different levels of the game. The Afghanistan captain revealed that the team had discussed ways of restricting him and had gathered useful information from players within the squad who had encountered Vaibhav during the IPL.
“[He is] an incredible talent,” Zadran said. “From the IPL onwards, he has been performing at different levels. We have discussed ways to stop him, and we have players in our squad who have faced him in the IPL, so we have taken some important information from them.”
The Afghan management has not relied solely on the observations of those players. Video analysis has also been used to examine Vaibhav’s batting, allowing the team to assess his strengths and identify areas it may be able to exploit.
Even so, Zadran does not want his side to overcomplicate its strategy. He said Afghanistan had watched clips of the teenager but wanted to keep its approach as simple as possible and concentrate on executing the plan properly once the match began.
Vaibhav’s growing reputation is not limited to T20 cricket. After attracting attention in the IPL, he has also shown that he can make an impact in the longer format. In the recently concluded Duleep Trophy, he scored 192 runs in five innings for East Zone.
One of his most notable contributions came in the semi-final against Central Zone, when he made 92. The innings played an important role in helping his side move towards victory and provided another indication of his ability to contribute beyond the shortest format.
His return to T20 cricket now adds another dimension to Afghanistan’s preparations. As an opener, Vaibhav has the opportunity to influence the game early, which makes restricting him before he settles into an innings particularly significant for the opposition. Afghanistan’s decision to study his previous performances reflects the level of attention he has already commanded despite his young age.
The series is also a significant test for Zadran himself. Having taken over the T20 captaincy from Rashid Khan, he is beginning a new phase of leadership and will be required to make decisions under pressure against a strong Indian side.
Zadran acknowledged that captaincy carries substantial responsibility, although he said he was enjoying the role. For him, one of the most important aspects of leadership is remaining calm and making the right decisions during difficult moments in a match.
Afghanistan will hope that familiarity with the conditions can help the team produce its best cricket against India. For now, however, much of the attention is centred on one of India’s youngest players.
Vaibhav may only be 15, but Afghanistan is already treating him as a serious threat. Whether the carefully prepared plans can restrict the teenage opener will be one of the intriguing subplots of the series.
