Gold and silver jewellery prices in Bangladesh are currently holding at the latest rates announced by the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS). Under the prevailing price structure, a buyer must pay Tk 232,930, including VAT, for one bhori of 22-carat gold jewellery.
For the same quantity of traditional-method gold, the price has been set at Tk 156,064. The difference reflects the separate pricing categories based on the quality and purity of the gold used in jewellery.
BAJUS introduced its latest rates from 10am on 12 September. The prices will remain in effect until the association issues a new price list. Retailers are therefore expected to follow the current rates for gold and silver jewellery during this period.
According to the current schedule, one bhori of 22-carat gold jewellery, regarded as the highest grade listed in the current rates, costs Tk 232,930 including VAT. The price of 21-carat gold jewellery is Tk 222,491 per bhori, while 18-carat gold jewellery is priced at Tk 191,056.
Traditional-method gold is considerably cheaper under the current schedule, with one bhori priced at Tk 156,064. The figures show that the grade of gold has a substantial effect on the price paid by consumers.
The difference between 22-carat and 21-carat gold is Tk 10,439 per bhori. The gap between 21-carat and 18-carat gold stands at Tk 31,435. Meanwhile, 22-carat gold is Tk 41,874 more expensive per bhori than 18-carat gold under the current BAJUS rates.
Silver jewellery is also being sold at different prices depending on its grade. One bhori of 22-carat silver jewellery is priced at Tk 5,016. The rate for 21-carat silver is Tk 4,782 per bhori, while 18-carat silver costs Tk 4,082. Traditional-method silver has been set at Tk 3,091 per bhori.
There is also a clear price gap between the different grades of silver. The difference between 22-carat and 21-carat silver is Tk 234 per bhori, while 21-carat silver costs Tk 700 more than 18-carat silver. Compared with traditional-method silver, 22-carat silver is Tk 1,925 more expensive per bhori.
The rates are particularly relevant for consumers planning to buy jewellery, as the same weight of gold or silver can carry different prices depending on its grade. Buyers may therefore check the stated carat, weight and applicable charges before completing a purchase.
For the time being, the BAJUS rates announced on 12 September remain applicable. Any subsequent change in gold or silver jewellery prices will depend on a fresh price decision from the association.
