Police have formally applied for a seven-day remand to interrogate Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Begum, following the death of his second wife at a government residence in Dhaka.
The investigative officer, Sub-Inspector Shamsuddoha Sarkar of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, submitted the remand prayer before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates’ Court. Law enforcement personnel escorted the suspects to the court lock-up in a police van under tight security on Monday afternoon.
The case stems from the discovery of the hanging body of 19-year-old Mariam Khatun on Sunday evening inside a flat at the NAM Bhaban complex in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. The government-allotted apartment belonged to Gazi Nazrul Islam, the former Member of Parliament for the Satkhira-4 constituency, where he resided with both his first and second wives.
Following the tragic recovery, Mariam’s father, Masum Billah, filed a formal case late Sunday night at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The complaint accuses Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Begum, and Mariam’s maternal uncle, Obaidur Rahman, of abetting suicide. Police confirmed the arrests of the politician and his first wife early Monday morning, while Obaidur Rahman remains at large as operations continue to locate him.
Officers from the Tejgaon Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed that the suspects were presented in court to face questioning under police custody to ascertain the precise circumstances leading up to the young woman’s death. Meanwhile, authorities are completing the post-mortem procedures at a hospital morgue before handing over Mariam’s remains to her family for burial rites.
The incident has drawn significant public and media attention due to the high-profile status of the former parliamentarian, who represented the Satkhira-4 constituency under the Jamaat-e-Islami banner. The NAM Bhaban residential quarters, designed to house members of parliament and government dignitaries, are subject to strict security protocols, making the incident a subject of intense scrutiny for capital investigators.
Police officials emphasised that a thorough probe is underway to determine whether marital discord, coercion, or domestic pressure played a role in the tragedy, assuring that all named individuals will face complete legal accountability based on forensic and testimonial evidence.
