Bangladesh’s Asian Games campaign ended with a goalless draw against Myanmar after the two sides failed to find a breakthrough in their final Group F match in Japan on Monday (21 September).
Bangladesh created opportunities but could not convert them, while Myanmar produced the greater attacking threat for long periods of the match. The result left Bangladesh with one point from the encounter and brought their campaign to an end.
The fixture carried added significance because Bangladesh had defeated Myanmar away from home last year to qualify for the Asian Cup for the first time. Around a year and a half later, however, Bangladesh were unable to repeat that result and finished their latest meeting without scoring.
Both teams entered the match looking for a response after difficult opening fixtures. Bangladesh had suffered a heavy 10-0 defeat against North Korea before losing 6-0 to South Korea. Myanmar had also endured substantial defeats, going down 5-0 to South Korea and 8-0 to North Korea.
With both sides having struggled in their opening two matches, the final group fixture represented an opportunity to end the campaign on a more positive note.
Myanmar started the match with greater attacking intent. In the 27th minute, they produced a dangerous effort that appeared capable of troubling the Bangladesh goal, but goalkeeper Rupna Chakma reacted well to keep the attempt out.
Rupna remained an important figure throughout the contest. Alongside her, defenders Shuli Azim and Shamsunnahar Senior played key roles in dealing with Myanmar’s attacks, particularly when the opposition attempted to create space from the wide areas.
Bangladesh looked to build attacks through Rituparna Chakma, Monika Chakma and Tahura Khatun. The team tried to move the ball forward quickly whenever opportunities appeared, but Myanmar’s defensive organisation limited Bangladesh’s ability to turn those moves into clear chances.
Myanmar, meanwhile, looked to Win Theingi Tun as one of their principal attacking threats. They repeatedly used both flanks to stretch the Bangladesh defence and create openings in front of goal.
The pattern continued after half-time. Myanmar maintained the greater attacking pressure and tested Bangladesh’s defensive line on several occasions. Yet their finishing remained ineffective, while Rupna repeatedly provided the final barrier between Myanmar and a goal.
Bangladesh had moments of their own. In the 84th minute, they won a corner, with captain Maria Manda responsible for the delivery. However, the set-piece did not produce the opportunity the team needed to break the deadlock.
Myanmar came close again in the closing stages. In the 81st minute, an attack created a promising opening near the Bangladesh goal, but a Bangladesh defender intervened at the right moment to prevent the chance from developing further.
Four minutes later, Myanmar again threatened, only to fail to finish the move. Bangladesh then conceded a foul in the 87th minute, giving Myanmar a free-kick. The resulting effort also failed to find the net.
The most significant moment came deep into added time. In the 91st minute, a Myanmar striker produced a dangerous attack and managed to get a close-range effort away. Once again, Rupna Chakma stood in the way. Her excellent save denied Myanmar what could have been a late winner and ensured that Bangladesh retained the clean sheet.
Myanmar finished the match with more attacking pressure and more shots, but their inability to beat Rupna or breach the Bangladesh defence ultimately kept the score level.
Bangladesh, for their part, could not generate enough attacking momentum to turn their chances into a goal. After 90 minutes plus added time, the match ended 0-0.
The draw brought Bangladesh’s Asian Games campaign to a close. Although the team avoided another defeat in their final group match, they were unable to secure the victory they needed and had to settle for a single point from the encounter.
