A 28-year-old woman in Faridpur district has been taken into police custody following a disturbing incident in which she attempted to hang her young child to force her expatriate husband to return to Bangladesh. The woman recorded the act and sent the video directly to her partner, but the footage subsequently leaked online, prompting swift action from law enforcement agencies.

The operation took place late on Tuesday night at around 11:30 pm in Radhanagar village, located within the Ramnagar union of Nagarkanda upazila. Police officers arrested the suspect, identified as Bithi Akhtar, and safely removed her two young sons—nine-year-old Abir and seven-year-old Tabir—taking them into protective custody.

The investigation began earlier that evening after a video depicting a woman attempting to place a makeshift noose around a young child’s neck began circulating widely across social media networks. As local online communities expressed outrage, Nagarkanda police launched an immediate probe to verify the authenticity of the footage and trace those involved. The breakthrough occurred when the children’s paternal aunt contacted the police station to share crucial details about the family and their whereabouts, enabling officers to execute a targeted raid.

During preliminary questioning, Bithi revealed that her husband, Abbas Ali, had been working in the Maldives for approximately seven years. Despite his lengthy absence, he had repeatedly delayed returning home, causing growing anger, distress, and frustration within the household. Driven by a desire to grab his attention and exert pressure on him, Bithi staged the life-threatening incident, recorded it, and sent the file to him overseas.

Officer-in-Charge of Nagarkanda Police Station, Rasul Samdani Azad, stated that authorities are examining whether broader domestic disputes or psychological factors contributed to the act. Given the severe nature of the incident and the danger posed to the minors, police are giving top priority to the case. While legal proceedings against Bithi Akhtar are currently being finalised, both children remain under official care to ensure their immediate physical and psychological well-being.
