The incident occurred on Sunday night in the South Baraipara area of Tongbhanga Union.

According to local sources, Nur Mohammad, also known as Dhakaiya, had been involved in a longstanding dispute with his elder brother Nur Islam over land. The dispute resurfaced on Sunday afternoon when the two brothers reportedly became involved in another argument concerning the contested property.

The situation later escalated into a physical confrontation. Nur Islam and several people accompanying him allegedly became involved in an altercation with Nur Mohammad. At one point, Nur Islam allegedly struck his younger brother in the chest with a stick, causing him to collapse on the ground.

Local residents then came to his assistance and took him to Hatibandha Upazila Health Complex in a critical condition. After examining him, the attending doctor referred him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Nur Mohammad, however, died on the way to Rangpur, according to his family.

His wife, Parvin Begum, alleged that while the injured man was being taken to hospital, people accompanying Nur Islam attacked them again. Local residents subsequently helped them reach Hatibandha Upazila Health Complex, from where Nur Mohammad was referred to Rangpur. He died while being transported there.

Hatibandha police station Officer-in-Charge Ashrafuzzaman Sarker confirmed the incident. He said the body had been sent to the district headquarters for a post-mortem examination.

According to the officer, Parvin Begum filed a complaint with the police, following which a case was registered. Police are now working to identify and arrest the other people accused in the case.

Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances of the alleged assault, the sequence of events during the confrontation and the accounts provided by those present. The post-mortem examination and further investigation will help establish the circumstances surrounding Nur Mohammad’s death and the roles of those involved.
