German Tourist Returns to Dhaka Empty-Handed After Theft in Natore

The quiet charm of exploring rural Bangladesh turned into an ordeal for eighteen-year-old German tourist Kryhl Lander, who left Dhaka empty-handed following a frantic search for his stolen belongings. Despite a massive joint operation by law enforcement agencies involving digital tracking, his prized MacBook and DSLR camera could not be recovered.
Lander boarded the Padma Express train bound for Dhaka from the Rajshahi Railway Station on Thursday afternoon at around 4:00 PM, carrying deep disappointment alongside his passport and mobile phone. His troubles began earlier in the week when he visited various historical sites in Bogura before catching the Banchhana Express from Santahar towards Natore. His initial travel itinerary aimed to take him through Natore to Darshana station to cross the border into India.
While at the Natore railway station passenger lounge on Wednesday afternoon, Lander stepped away briefly to use an ATM for train tickets. Entrusting his heavy bag to a man who falsely claimed to be a railway official, the young tourist returned to find both the individual and his belongings vanished. The stolen bag contained crucial research data, personal documents, and professional camera equipment vital for his maiden voyage to the country.
Realising the digital footprint of his stolen laptop indicated movement towards Rajshahi, Lander rushed there late Wednesday night. Local police accommodated him at a hotel near the station and later escorted him to the Rajshahi railway police station, where he spent hours briefing local journalists about the incident. While deeply appreciative of the prompt logistical support and empathy shown by Bangladeshi police, he remained anxious about the irreplaceable data stored on his computer.
Law enforcement spared no effort in trying to track down the items. Multiple units, including the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, Detective Branch, Special Response Battalion, Tourist Police, and Railway Police, formed a coordinated task force. Investigators tracked the laptop’s erratic signal across several locations in Rajshahi, including the Railgate area and near the local women’s college, before detecting a signal near the Abdulpur railway station early Thursday morning. Police even conducted thorough manual searches aboard the Titumir and Bonolata Express trains.
However, because the laptop lacked an active SIM card, pinpointing its exact physical location proved exceptionally difficult for investigators. Rajshahi Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hafizur Rahman confirmed that search efforts remain active despite the tourist’s departure. Emphasising that foreign visitors are regarded as esteemed guests, authorities assured that investigative teams will continue tracking leads to recover the stolen property and bring the culprit to justice.
