Three police officers, including an Officer-in-Charge, sustained injuries in Kushtia’s Daulatpur Upazila after a violent confrontation broke out during an operation to rescue a madrasa principal accused of attempting to sexually assault a male student.
The incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon (8 October) at the Marakajul Quran Was Sunnah Madrasa in the Khalishakundi area. Local residents blockaded the institution after allegations emerged that the principal, identified as Ashikullah, had attempted to assault an residential student on Wednesday night.
According to the victim’s father, the young boy disclosed the ordeal to him, revealing a pattern of recurring misconduct by the principal. The father explained that following his wife’s death four years ago, he enrolled his son at the madrasa to fulfil her wish for the boy to become a Hafez (one who memorises the Quran). Heartbroken over the allegations, the father demanded a full police investigation and exemplary punishment for the perpetrator.
As news of the alleged assault spread across the locality on Thursday morning, an angry crowd gathered at the madrasa, confining the principal inside the facility. Responding to reports of civil unrest, a police contingent led by Daulatpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalidur Rahman arrived at the scene to restore order and take the accused into custody.
Tensions escalated when the crowd attempted to assault the principal whilst police were securing him. Officers intervened to protect the suspect, leading to scuffles and stone-pelting from the crowd. OC Khalidur Rahman, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), and a police constable were injured during the clash. The ASI suffered more substantial injuries, whereas the OC received outpatient medical treatment before returning to duty.
Local sources indicated that Ashikullah originates from Jashore district and resides at his in-laws’ home in Ati village under Mirpur Upazila. Additional police units have been deployed across Khalishakundi to prevent further unrest.
OC Khalidur Rahman confirmed that the principal is currently in police custody for questioning. Official charges and a formal case are expected to be filed by the victim’s family as preliminary inquiries proceed.
