A 35-year-old sanitation worker employed by the Sylhet City Corporation was brutally stabbed to death in the Kastoghar Sweeper Colony area of Sylhet city on Sunday evening, following an altercation that erupted when he protested against a man taking unauthorised photographs of his wife.
The victim, identified as Hridoy Kumar Harijon, was a resident of the Kastoghar colony and the sole breadwinner for his family, leaving behind his wife, Pinky Rani, and four young children—two sons and two daughters.
According to eyewitnesses and family members, the incident unfolded at around 8:00 pm on Sunday. A local individual named Amin reportedly pointed his mobile phone at Hridoy’s wife and began taking photographs without her consent. Upon noticing this, Hridoy confronted Amin and strongly objected to his intrusive behaviour. The confrontation quickly escalated into a heated verbal argument between the two men.
Witnesses stated that during the altercation, Amin placed a phone call to summon several associates to the scene. Shortly after their arrival, the group launched a violent assault on Hridoy, stabbing him repeatedly across various parts of his body with sharp weapons before fleeing the area. Local residents rushed the critically injured worker to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, where attending doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Hridoy’s younger brother, Ajay Kumar Harijon, expressed deep grief and outrage over the public murder, stating that his brother was slain merely for defending his wife’s dignity. He urged law enforcement authorities to ensure the swift arrest and exemplary punishment of all perpetrators involved in the crime.
Khan Mohammad Mainul Zakir, the Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station, confirmed that police officers visited the crime scene promptly to collect evidence and interview potential witnesses. Law enforcement agencies have identified the key suspects involved in the fatal stabbing, and multiple specialized police teams are currently conducting raids across various locations in the region to apprehend them. Following the completion of a forensic post-mortem examination on Monday, the victim’s body was formally handed over to his grieving family for
