Sonargaon University Edge Past ULAB in ABG University Cup

Sonargaon University (SU) began their football campaign in the ABG University Cup 2026 with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), securing all three points in a closely contested Group B encounter.

The match, the second fixture of the day, took place at Bashundhara Kings Arena in the capital on Monday, 26 October, with kick-off at 6.30 pm. Both sides started brightly, producing an engaging contest characterised by attacking moves and quick responses as they sought to gain an early advantage.

Sonargaon made the breakthrough in the seventh minute, with Rashed finding the net with a well-timed header from a corner. The goal proved decisive, giving SU an early lead and putting ULAB under pressure to respond.

The opening stages had already offered a glimpse of the attacking intent shown by both teams. In the sixth minute, Sonargaon won a free-kick after a foul by ULAB outside their penalty area. The resulting effort looked promising, but ULAB’s goalkeeper produced an excellent save to deny the attacking side and keep the score level.

Sonargaon continued to press, however, and their persistence paid off just a minute later. Following a corner, Rashed connected with a header that sent the ball into the net, handing his side a 1–0 advantage. The early goal gave SU a valuable platform from which to manage the remainder of the contest.

ULAB attempted to recover from the setback and find an equaliser before the interval, but Sonargaon maintained their advantage. Rashed’s seventh-minute strike remained the difference between the teams at half-time, leaving ULAB with work to do in the second period.

The match remained competitive after the restart. ULAB pushed forward in search of an equaliser, showing determination to get back into the game. However, their efforts failed to produce a goal as Sonargaon’s defence held firm under pressure.

SU also created several attacking opportunities in the second half and looked for a chance to extend their lead. Despite those efforts, they were unable to find the net again. Nevertheless, their early advantage proved sufficient to secure the win.

The final whistle confirmed a 1–0 victory for Sonargaon University, who collected three points from their opening Group B fixture. Rashed’s early header ultimately separated the sides in a match in which defensive discipline proved just as important as attacking initiative.

The result gives Sonargaon a positive start to their campaign in the university football competition. An opening victory can provide a welcome boost in confidence, although maintaining consistency will be essential as the group stage progresses.

The success also adds to Sonargaon University’s encouraging sporting start, following its achievements in cricket. With football now producing a winning result as well, the university has made a promising opening to its participation in the tournament.

For ULAB, the narrow defeat will be disappointing, particularly after their goalkeeper’s early save had kept the contest goalless. Their inability to convert second-half pressure into an equaliser ultimately proved costly. Sonargaon, meanwhile, will take confidence from a disciplined performance and a result secured through Rashed’s decisive contribution in the opening minutes.
