The Dangers of Hustle Culture: A Toxic Trend

The modern obsession with hustle culture has long been marketed as a badge of honour, yet experts increasingly warn that this relentless drive is doing far more harm than good. While dedication and hard work remain fundamental to professional achievement, overexerting oneself to the detriment of personal well-being is neither necessary nor sustainable.

Arijit Saha, a Senior Business Analyst at a prominent IT firm, points out that hustle culture turns toxic when employees face pressure to work overtime during unconventional hours, cultivating a high-pressure environment where rest is treated as a flaw.

This unyielding professional push frequently culminates in severe burnout. The World Health Organization defines burnout as a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. The condition manifests when workers experience a sharp decline in motivation and energy, severely degrading both their workplace performance and general quality of life.

The Hidden Toll of Hustle Culture and Unrelenting Overwork

The repercussions extend well beyond psychological exhaustion. Extended working hours and perpetual stress manifest in physical ailments, including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, severe sleep disorders, heightened anxiety, hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Dr M. Tasdik Hasan, a mental health expert, warns of the profound dangers associated with extreme overwork, noting that demanding schedules disrupt the body’s natural biological rhythms. In severe instances, the physical and mental toll linked to overwork can escalate to tragic outcomes, including suicide—a crisis that has become a prominent public health concern in countries such as Japan.

Fueling this environment is the “winner takes all” ethos prevalent across modern workplaces. When healthy competition shifts into a relentless struggle for corporate advancement, it fosters a toxic rivalry. Colleagues find themselves competing not merely on output or innovation, but on sheer hours logged at their desks. This shift damages organizational morale and dismantles collaborative efforts.

The pressure is by no means confined to corporate offices; university campuses are witnessing a similar surge in toxic productivity. Students feel compelled to operate at maximum capacity without pause. Zarin Fariha, a Philosophy and Sociology student at Monash University, recalled believing that productivity meant working non-stop, even at the expense of staying awake all night. She noted that constant burnout ultimately took a heavy physical and mental toll, leaving her depleted of energy for routine daily tasks.

The COVID-19 pandemic further intensified these pressures, particularly for entrepreneurs and remote workers forced to adapt to shifting economic realities. According to Dr Hasan, the surge in home-based work left many struggling with heightened anxiety stemming from job insecurity, salary reductions, and the blurred boundaries between professional duties and personal domestic life. The resulting isolation and uncertainty have significantly elevated baseline stress levels globally.

Escaping the grip of hustle culture requires a deliberate shift towards balance and self-care. Sleep plays a critical role; research indicates that a mere 1 to 3 per cent of the global population can function effectively on just five to six hours of sleep per night. For the vast majority, adequate rest is essential to maintain cognitive function, sound decision-making, and emotional stability.

Experts also advocate for strict workplace boundaries. Saha emphasizes the necessity of protecting personal time by refusing to work during weekends or past regular business hours. Incorporating regular short breaks throughout the working day, reserving weekends for personal hobbies or mindfulness, and establishing clear limits between professional commitments and private life remain vital steps in reclaiming health and preventing chronic burnout.
