In Santhia upazila of Pabna, unknown individuals deliberately set fire to the digital signboard of the Khetupara branch of Grameen Bank late on Sunday night, 23 November. Authorities have confirmed the incident, which has since sparked concern among local residents and social media users.
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anisur Rahman of Santhia Police Station, the perpetrators poured petrol onto the signboard before igniting it. The digital board, installed atop the boundary wall of the bank branch, was completely engulfed in flames within moments.
A video of the incident quickly circulated on social media, showing the act in progress. In the footage, the individuals can be seen deliberately pouring petrol over the structure before setting it alight, prompting concerns over possible motives.
OC Anisur Rahman stated that police have inspected the scene and taken note of the security arrangements around the bank. The officer speculated that the act could have been intended to create instability or spread fear, but emphasised that investigations are ongoing. “The digital signboard was installed on the boundary wall beside the main road in front of the bank. We are conducting inquiries to identify those responsible,” he said.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 2:00 am, and no one has yet been apprehended. So far, the bank has not filed a formal written complaint, though the authorities are actively investigating the circumstances and collecting evidence from the scene.
Local residents expressed shock at the attack, noting that the area is usually quiet at night. Many have called for increased security measures at bank branches to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage, collecting witness statements, and coordinating with local law enforcement to track the culprits. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities assuring the public that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure accountability.
