In Barishal, five newborn quintuplets, delivered naturally without caesarean section, have been admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital after falling ill from cold-related health issues. The babies, born on 6 October at Hemayet Uddin Diabetic General Hospital in Barishal city, were hospitalised on Tuesday, roughly two months after their birth.

Their father, Sohel Hawlader, a small shopkeeper, said the children gradually became unwell over several days. “Daily care is a challenge,” he explained, “and the costs of milk, diapers, and warm clothing are very difficult to meet.” Despite their initial health, the drop in temperature has affected the quintuplets, three boys and two girls, named Hasan, Hossain, Moyachin, Habiba, and Umama. Their birth had captured national attention earlier this year.

Officials from the Barishal District Social Services Office, including Deputy Director A K M Akhtaruzzaman Talukder and Assistant Director Sajjad Parvez, visited the hospital to provide immediate support. Sajjad Parvez confirmed that free medicines and a 15-day supply of milk had been provided, but emphasised that long-term assistance is essential to ensure the children’s proper care and growth.

Following their birth, the humanitarian organisation Event 84 had previously offered assistance, including providing a cow for the family. However, managing the daily care, nutrition, and medical expenses for five children simultaneously has proven to be extremely challenging for Sohel and his wife, Lamia Akter.

Health experts advise that newborns, especially multiple births, are particularly vulnerable to cold weather, requiring warm clothing, proper feeding, and vigilant care. The family has appealed to the public and charitable organisations for additional support to ensure the quintuplets’ health and wellbeing.
