City Coach Cancels Players’ Extra Christmas Break After West Ham Win

Manchester City may have recorded an emphatic 3–0 victory over West Ham United, but the scoreline failed to mask Pep Guardiola’s dissatisfaction with his team’s overall performance. Despite the comfortable result at the Etihad Stadium, the City manager made it clear that the standards he demands were not met. As a consequence, Guardiola took the firm decision to cancel the players’ planned additional Christmas holiday, underlining his uncompromising approach to success.

Speaking after the match, Guardiola delivered a stern message to his squad. He stressed that winning trophies requires far more than isolated moments of quality or flattering results on the scoreboard. According to the Spanish coach, City’s display against West Ham lacked the intensity, control and consistency that define champions, even if the goals suggested otherwise.

Originally, the club had scheduled a three-day break for the players, taking advantage of a relatively rare gap in the busy festive fixture list. With City not due to play again until 27 December, when they face Nottingham Forest, the coaching staff had planned to allow the squad time off from Monday to Wednesday. Under that arrangement, players would have enjoyed a brief rest with their families before returning to training on Christmas Day, 25 December.

However, several members of the squad reportedly requested an additional day off on Sunday, hoping to extend their time with family and friends during the festive period. Guardiola, unimpressed by the team’s performance against West Ham, rejected the request outright. As a result, players were instructed to report to the City Football Academy on Sunday, before beginning their shortened break.

Explaining his decision, Guardiola said that the request for extra time off simply did not align with what he saw on the pitch. Players who did not feature against West Ham were instead assigned recovery sessions and training work, while the rest of the squad followed a tightly managed schedule. After the three-day break, City will have only two full days to prepare for the trip to Nottingham Forest.

Guardiola also reflected on the relentless nature of English football. He acknowledged that, since arriving in England, he has learned the importance of granting players rest whenever possible. Family time and mental recovery, he believes, are essential in such a demanding environment. Nevertheless, the congested fixture list leaves little room for flexibility.

The City boss concluded by emphasising the importance of timing. Returning to training at the right moment, he said, keeps players fresh both physically and mentally. While he wants his squad to enjoy time away from football and recharge with their loved ones, his own commitment remains unchanged: to work relentlessly and ensure Manchester City meet the highest standards, even during the festive season.
