Severely ill Damien Martin is in hospital, currently in a coma

Australian cricket legend Damien Martin has been admitted to hospital in a critical condition and is currently in an induced coma. Reports from the media indicate that he is suffering from meningitis, a potentially life-threatening infection that causes inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

The 54-year-old former cricketer fell ill last week on Boxing Day. His condition deteriorated while resting at home, prompting his urgent hospitalisation. Australian news outlets have confirmed that Martin is receiving intensive medical care specifically aimed at treating meningitis.

Speaking to The Australian, former Australian captain and close friend Adam Gilchrist expressed his concern and support, stating: “He is receiving the best possible care. Amanda and the family know that many people are praying for them and sending their best wishes.”

Former national coach Darren Lehmann also extended a message of solidarity on social media, writing: “Lots of love and prayers… stay strong, keep fighting, legend. Love to the family.”

Damien Martin was widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest stroke-makers. A key member of Steve Waugh’s formidable Australian side, he played 67 Test matches and 208 One Day Internationals (ODIs), scoring 13 Test centuries with a batting average of 46.37. He was also an integral part of the 2003 World Cup-winning squad, famously scoring an unbeaten 88 in the final against India and forming a match-winning partnership with Ricky Ponting.

Martin retired from international cricket during the 2006 Ashes series. Following his playing career, he briefly worked as a commentator before largely withdrawing from public life.
