“Doubts over Tilak Varma’s inclusion in the T20 squad against New Zealand.”

The availability of Tilak Varma for India’s upcoming T20 series against New Zealand has emerged as a source of concern for selectors, fans, and the team management alike, not to mention the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The Hyderabad batter, who was a standout performer during India’s triumphant campaign in the Asia Cup in Dubai last year, is currently recuperating in Rajkot, with doubts over his readiness for the T20 World Cup, scheduled to commence next month.

Varma underwent surgery for Testicular Torsion on Wednesday, 7 January, a mere month before the World Cup begins. Officials from the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) have indicated that full recovery typically requires three to four weeks, placing his participation in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand in doubt. While selectors are expected to announce a replacement if necessary, the situation remains fluid.

Despite the cautious assessments, sources close to Varma have expressed optimism. “He will be fit in a week’s time. It was a minor surgery, not bone-related, and he will be available soon. He will definitely feature in some of the T20I matches against New Zealand, if not all,” a source told Cricbuzz. India are scheduled to play their World Cup opener against the United States in Mumbai on 7 February.

The injury occurred during Hyderabad’s Vijay Hazare Trophy clash against Bengal on 6 January. Batting at No. 3 and leading the side, Varma scored 34 off 45 deliveries before sustaining the blow. He reported discomfort the following day, prompting immediate surgical intervention.

The same match also witnessed an extraordinary late flourish from Hyderabad opener Aman Rao, who smashed 14 runs off the final three deliveries—6, 2, 6—completing a memorable double century. Hyderabad triumphed over Bengal by 107 runs.

With Varma sidelined, Hyderabad are currently facing Jammu & Kashmir on Thursday, 8 January, under the captaincy of Chama Milind, who has taken the reins in his absence. Fans and selectors alike will be keenly monitoring Varma’s recovery as India finalises its plans for the World Cup.
