Digital Courting and Deception
The roots of the incident trace back eight months, when Raihan, then working in Dubai, connected with the undergraduate student via Facebook. What began as casual social media interaction transitioned into a romantic relationship conducted entirely over the telephone. Relying on the suspect’s promises of a shared future, the victim remained in constant contact throughout his time abroad.
Raihan returned to Bangladesh on 30 December 2025. Upon his arrival, he reportedly exploited the victim’s trust by taking her to various hotels and tourist spots within the sub-district, repeatedly assuring her that their marriage was imminent.

The Betrayal of Hospitality
The situation reached a climax on Monday night when Raihan visited the home of the victim’s uncle. Pretending to be there to formalise the marriage discussion with her elders, he requested to spend the night. In an act of traditional hospitality, the family accommodated him in a separate room.
However, once the household had retired for the evening, Raihan allegedly trespassed into the student’s bedroom and attempted to assault her. Her screams for help alerted the family, who intervened and rescued the girl. Although Raihan initially managed to flee the scene during the commotion, he could not remain at large for long.
Police Intervention and Judicial Process
The following morning, the victim arrived at the police station to record her statement. Based on the First Information Report (FIR), the Borhanuddin police launched a targeted operation that resulted in the suspect’s arrest.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Borhanuddin Police Station, Md. Moniruzzaman, stated that the evidence provided by the victim was substantial enough to initiate immediate proceedings. “We have arrested the individual based on the student’s allegations of attempted rape. He was produced before the court today and has been remanded into custody as the investigation continues,” the OC confirmed.
This case has sparked local debate regarding the vulnerability of young women to “romance scams” and the necessity for caution when engaging with individuals via social media, even those from the local community.
