London’s cultural calendar was enriched once again as the British Bangladeshi community gathered for an evening of music, philosophy and shared heritage at the much-anticipated Baul Festival London 2026. Organised by Bangla Craze UK, the festival transformed the Colosseum Suite into a vibrant meeting place where tradition met cosmopolitan London, and where the soulful strains of Baul music resonated far beyond the stage.
The highlight of the evening was the performance of acclaimed vocalist Sharmin Dipu, whose emotive voice and deep engagement with Baul philosophy held the audience spellbound. With a repertoire rooted in mysticism, humanism and spiritual introspection, she reminded listeners that Baul music is not merely a genre, but a way of seeing the world—one that celebrates love, equality and the search for the inner self.
Alongside Sharmin Dipu, the festival featured a distinguished line-up of Baul and folk artistes from Bangladesh and the diaspora, including Sagar Baul, Beli Afroze, Baul M Hossain, Sajjad Noor, Bonna Talukder, Baul Ikram Uddin and Rana. Several talented UK-based Bangladeshi performers also took to the stage, reinforcing the continuity of folk traditions across generations and borders. Their collective performances offered a rich tapestry of sound, blending devotion, rhythm and storytelling.
Although the event was ticketed, attendance was enthusiastic, reflecting the diaspora’s enduring connection to cultural roots. Faisal Ahmed, Chief Executive of Bangla Craze UK, said the organisation’s mission is to showcase Bangladesh’s folk heritage in the heart of London. He noted that hosting such festivals annually is part of a long-term vision to introduce younger generations to Baul music and its inclusive philosophy.
Sharing her reflections, Sharmin Dipu described performing Baul songs in a multicultural city like London as both humbling and deeply emotional. She emphasised that when people from diverse backgrounds listen attentively to Baul music, it affirms the idea that culture transcends geography. Fellow singer Kamruzzaman Rabbi echoed this sentiment, praising both the organisers and Sharmin Dipu—who also serves as the event’s brand ambassador—for their dedication and sincerity.
Instrumental support was provided by London-based Bengali musicians Tanim, Hasan, Rizan and Samrat, whose skilful fusion of traditional instruments such as the ektara and dotara with modern arrangements added freshness and depth to the performances.
Notably, Sharmin Dipu continues to enjoy strong popularity in both Bangladesh and the United Kingdom. While she excels in playback, modern, folk and Nazrul music, it is in Baul and folk traditions that her artistry finds its most devoted audience. Alongside her musical career, she practises law in London, exemplifying a multifaceted professional and cultural identity.
