After a record-breaking battle, India wins the series

India celebrated a resounding triumph in the T20 series against New Zealand on Saturday, 31 January, overturning the disappointment of their earlier home ODI series defeat. In a breathtaking final encounter, the Indian side, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, amassed a colossal 271 runs, ultimately securing a 46-run victory as New Zealand were bowled out for 225. This result sealed the five-match series 4–1 in India’s favour.

The final match was a spectacle that saw multiple records fall, underlining India’s dominance in the shortest format. The 271-run total is now the third-highest score in international T20 cricket, while India has also become the first team to notch up four scores of 250+ in T20 internationals, surpassing the previous joint record held with Zimbabwe.

Indian batters displayed explosive intent, striking 23 sixes in the match — a figure unmatched by any other full-member nation in a single T20 innings. This feat equals the record set by South Africa in Johannesburg in 2024 against India. Over the course of the series, India smashed 69 sixes, setting a world record for the most sixes in a bilateral series, while New Zealand contributed 47 sixes, making a combined total of 116 sixes — the third-highest in any bilateral T20 series.

The match also witnessed individual brilliance. Ishan Kishan scored a rapid century off just 42 balls, marking the fastest T20 century against New Zealand and the fifth-fastest for India in T20 cricket. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav reached the milestone of 3,000 international T20 runs in just 1,822 balls, surpassing the previous record of 1,947 balls held by UAE’s Mohammed Wasim, thereby becoming the fastest to this landmark in international T20 cricket.

Bowling, however, saw some challenging moments for India. Jasprit Bumrah conceded 58 runs in four overs, registering his most expensive T20 innings to date. In the 14th over alone, he gave away 22 runs, the highest he has ever conceded in a single over in international T20s.
