Rabiul Competes in Asian Shooting Championship

Despite security concerns preventing the Bangladesh cricket team from participating in the upcoming T20 World Cup in India, the government has taken a different approach for the nation’s shooting contingent. Bangladesh’s top shooter, Rabiul Islam, accompanied by his coach Sharmin Akter, arrived in Delhi yesterday to compete in the Asian Shooting Championship.

According to Aleya Ferdous, Secretary General of the Bangladesh Shooting Federation (BSF), the federation has been vigilant from the outset regarding the travel and safety of both the athlete and coach. She stated, “Our shooter and coach arrived in India yesterday. We have been in regular contact with the Indian Shooting Federation and the Asian Shooting Federation. All security protocols were verified in advance to ensure their safety.”

Rabiul Islam is a seasoned athlete with considerable international experience, having previously represented Bangladesh at the 2024 Paris Olympics. His exposure to numerous international competitions equips him with the resilience required for high-pressure events. Similarly, Sharmin Akter, a former star shooter herself, brings extensive expertise to her coaching role, offering both technical guidance and mentorship. Aleya Ferdous emphasised that the combined experience of the athlete and coach has instilled confidence in their capacity to adapt to unfamiliar environments and maintain focus under competitive conditions.

Rabiul’s event is scheduled for 5 February, and he expressed a positive impression from his early days in Delhi. He reported, “So far, everything has been secure and smooth. Immigration formalities were quick, and both the hotel and shooting range facilities are excellent. We haven’t faced any issues or challenges, and the hospitality and amenities have been very satisfactory.”

The Bangladesh Shooting Federation has worked closely with Indian organisers to ensure a safe and professional environment for their representatives. Continuous communication with event authorities has provided assurances regarding venue security, transportation, and accommodation, mitigating concerns that might arise from geopolitical sensitivities.
