Clash Erupts at Brahmanbaria Police Lines Over Loud Music

A clash broke out between police personnel and madrasa students inside the Brahmanbaria Police Lines on Tuesday night after a dispute over loud music at a cultural programme. At least 30 people were injured in the incident, including at least 20 madrasa students, according to information available after the confrontation.

The incident occurred at around 11pm on Tuesday, 18 August, at the Police Lines in Paschim Medda, within Brahmanbaria municipal area. The situation remained tense in and around the police compound until late into the night before discussions between the police and madrasa authorities helped restore calm.

According to local residents and madrasa students, the district police had organised a cultural programme inside the Police Lines to mark the arrival of the Deputy Inspector General of the Chattogram Range. Music was being played during the event. At one stage, several madrasa students reportedly approached those attending the programme and requested that the volume be reduced, saying the loud music was disturbing the surrounding area.

The request allegedly led to an argument between the students and police personnel. As tensions escalated, more than 100 madrasa students reportedly entered the Police Lines. They were subsequently accused of attacking the police compound and damaging property.

Police moved to bring the situation under control and reportedly used batons during the confrontation. At least 20 madrasa students were injured in the ensuing action. Witnesses also said that several police personnel sustained injuries during the initial stages of the confrontation, adding to the tension between the two sides.

As news of the incident spread, people gathered around the Police Lines, prompting law enforcement personnel to adopt a heightened security posture. The confrontation raised concern that the dispute could develop into a wider disturbance in the surrounding neighbourhood.

The situation began to ease after senior officials held discussions with representatives of the madrasa. Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police Shah Md Abdur Rauf, the district council administrator and Brahmanbaria district BNP general secretary Md Sirajul Islam were among those involved in the discussions.

During the meeting, madrasa representatives reportedly demanded that loud music should not be played at the Police Lines in future, particularly at night. They also called for action against those allegedly responsible for assaulting students during the confrontation.

Superintendent of Police Shah Md Abdur Rauf said that if anyone had acted out of excessive enthusiasm or otherwise engaged in inappropriate conduct, the matter would be examined and necessary action would be taken.

The exact medical condition of all those injured was not immediately available. Details of where the injured were treated were also unclear. Likewise, no precise assessment of any damage to the Police Lines had been released immediately after the incident.

The episode has highlighted how a relatively local dispute over noise escalated rapidly into a confrontation involving a large number of people. With the situation eventually brought under control through discussions between the authorities and madrasa representatives, attention is now focused on establishing what triggered the violence and whether any further action will follow.
