An Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Sirajganj has directed the publication of a newspaper notice regarding the arrest warrant issued against Kusthia-3 (Sadar) constituency Member of Parliament Mufti Amir Hamza in connection with a defamation case.
The order was issued on Sunday (17 May) by Judge Suman Karmakar of the Sirajganj Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court.
The case was filed over allegations of derogatory remarks concerning the Minister for Power and Energy and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku. According to the complaint, the remarks allegedly included calling him “atheist” and “anti-Islam”.
The complainant, Advocate Humayun Kabir Karnel, confirmed the court’s latest directive.
Case background and procedural timeline
Court documents indicate that Advocate Humayun Kabir Karnel filed a defamation suit on 2 April against Mufti Amir Hamza over the alleged comments. On the same day, the court issued a summons instructing him to appear before it on 21 April.
However, as the accused did not appear on the scheduled date, the court issued an arrest warrant against him. Despite this, he remained absent from subsequent proceedings.
On the latest scheduled hearing date, which fell on Sunday, the accused again failed to appear before the court. Following his continued absence, the court ordered the publication of a notice in newspapers regarding the arrest warrant.
