Police have arrested five people, including a mother and her son, in connection with the murder of a businessman in Tangail, claiming to have unravelled what initially appeared to be a clueless killing.
The arrests were announced on Saturday (11 July) during a press briefing by Golam Moktar Ashraf Uddin, Officer-in-Charge of Tangail Sadar Police Station. Investigators said the case was solved through sustained questioning, evidence gathering and follow-up operations after the victim’s body was recovered earlier this month.
Those arrested have been identified as Hanufa Begum, 38, widow of the late Shaukat Ali, her son Humayun, 22, Noor Mohammad, 26, and Babu, 28, both sons of the late Anwar Hossain, and Aynal Haque, 55, son of the late Rustam Ali. All are residents of the Quizbari area of Tangail.
According to the police investigation, the victim, businessman Masud Rana, had reportedly maintained a long-standing extramarital relationship with Hanufa Begum. Investigators believe the relationship eventually became known to members of her family, creating tensions that ultimately led to the fatal attack.
Police said Masud Rana’s body was recovered on 5 July, prompting the launch of a murder investigation. As officers worked to reconstruct the victim’s final movements and examine available evidence, Hanufa Begum came under suspicion and was taken into custody for questioning.
During interrogation, investigators claim she confessed to her involvement in the incident and provided information that led police to the remaining suspects. Based on those disclosures, law enforcement officers carried out further operations and arrested the other accused individuals.
The Officer-in-Charge said the five suspects appeared before a court on Friday, where they reportedly gave confessional statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Such statements are recorded before a judicial magistrate and form part of the legal process, although the investigation continues alongside the examination of other evidence.
Police also recovered a hammer believed to have been used in the killing. The weapon has been seized as evidence and will undergo further forensic examination if required as part of the investigation.
Investigators said the case highlights the importance of methodical police work in resolving complex homicide investigations, particularly those that initially lack obvious leads or witnesses. Officers are continuing to verify the sequence of events, examine the role of each accused individual and determine whether anyone else may have been involved.
Police added that a charge sheet will be submitted once the investigation is completed and all available evidence has been thoroughly reviewed. The case has drawn considerable attention in the local community, with authorities pledging to pursue the investigation in accordance with the law and ensure that all those found responsible are brought before the courts.
