A senior local politician from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has died from severe stab wounds following a violent clash during a community arbitration meeting in Dhaka. The incident, which unfolded in the Nabodaya Housing area of Adabor, was reportedly triggered by a lingering dispute over a football match involving the Brazil national team.
The deceased, thirty-year-old Md Abul Bashar Badsha, served as the general secretary of the Nabodaya Housing unit of the BNP. Another local leader, the unit’s president, Md Saddam, aged thirty-five, sustained critical injuries during the same assault and is currently receiving emergency medical treatment at a local hospital.
The roots of the fatal encounter trace back to the evening of 29 June in Nabodaya Housing. According to local sources, an altercation broke out following the screening of a football match involving Brazil. A group of local youths began playing drums to celebrate, a gesture that was fiercely opposed by Habibur Rahman, a member of the Adabor Thana BNP. What started as a verbal disagreement quickly escalated, creating palpable tension in the neighbourhood over the subsequent forty-eight hours.
In an attempt to defuse the growing hostility and restore order, community elders and local political figures organised a formal arbitration meeting, known locally as a shalish. The meeting commenced at around 8:30 pm on Wednesday at the Nabodaya Bazar area. However, instead of resolving the conflict, the gathering turned into a scene of absolute chaos.
Eyewitnesses reported that as the discussions were underway, a group of armed individuals suddenly gatecrashed the venue. The attackers, identified by onlookers as Ripon, Nirob, Parvez, and Masum, were allegedly wielding sharp, concealed weapons. Without warning, they launched a targeted assault on Habibur Rahman’s supporters, leaving Saddam and Badsha critically injured on the ground before fleeing the scene.
Local residents rushed to the aid of the bleeding politicians, transporting them immediately to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. As Badsha’s physical condition rapidly deteriorated, doctors authorised his immediate transfer to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for specialised trauma care. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 11:30 pm.
The Officer-in-Charge of Adabor Police Station, Md Jahidul Islam Jahangir, confirmed the casualty and stated that additional police personnel have been deployed to the area to prevent further unrest. Local residents have claimed that the primary suspects are notorious members of an organised teenage gang operating within the neighbourhood.
Providing an update on the law enforcement response, the Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Mohammadpur Zone, Jewel Rana, stated that an intensive investigation is underway. Authorities are currently gathering forensic evidence and interviewing witnesses to track down the fugitives. Formal legal proceedings are being processed, and police have assured the public that all individuals involved in the murder will face the full force of the law.
