Fox Attacks Injure 14 in Sripur

At least 14 people, including women, men and children, were injured after a series of fox attacks in a single night in Sripur, Gazipur, leaving residents alarmed and raising concerns over public safety.

The attacks took place on Saturday night in Gosinga Union and Ward No. 1 of Sripur Municipality. According to local residents, fox sightings in the area have increased noticeably over the past several days. What had initially been regarded as an occasional appearance of wild animals quickly turned into a frightening ordeal when one or more foxes entered residential neighbourhoods after dusk and began attacking people.

Witnesses said the animals first targeted pedestrians on village roads before moving into residential compounds. In several instances, the foxes reportedly entered homes and bit occupants, creating panic among families. Parents became particularly concerned for the safety of their children as news of the attacks spread rapidly throughout the community.

The identities of several of the injured have been confirmed. They include Akash, 13; Nayeem, 11; Majeda, 45; Rozina, 36; Helena Akter, 40; Ashraful Islam, 26; Shefali, 34; Saifunnahar, 23; and Araf, 14. The identities of the remaining victims had not been confirmed immediately.

Residents of Bhangnahati village alleged that a fox entered a house near the Kamil Madrasa and attacked two women inside the residence. The unusual nature of the incident has heightened fears among locals, many of whom are now avoiding unnecessary movement after dark and keeping children indoors.

Dr Ali Azgar Sohag, the emergency department physician at Sripur Upazila Health Complex, said that by 9:30 p.m. on Saturday at least 14 victims of fox bites had received treatment at the hospital. Medical staff provided immediate care to the injured and advised them on the necessary follow-up treatment associated with animal bites.

Local people have urged the authorities to take swift action to control the movement of wild animals in populated areas and strengthen public safety measures. They believe the recent increase in fox activity requires close monitoring to prevent further attacks.

Officials have not yet indicated what caused the animals to enter residential areas. Local residents, however, say the growing presence of foxes in nearby settlements has become a matter of increasing concern and are calling for the relevant authorities to assess the situation and implement appropriate preventive measures.
