Fenerbahçe have ended an 18-year wait to return to the main stage of the UEFA Champions League after defeating French side Lyon 2–1 away from home on Wednesday night. The Turkish giants secured a 3–2 aggregate victory over the two legs, booking their place in the competition’s league phase.
The result was particularly significant because the first leg in Istanbul had ended 1–1, leaving Fenerbahçe with little room for error in the return fixture. Knowing that a victory would be enough to take them through, the visitors began with attacking intent and quickly put Lyon under pressure.
Fenerbahçe broke the deadlock in the 24th minute. Oğuz Aydın delivered a dangerous cross towards the area, and Vedat Muriqi rose to meet it with a header. Lyon goalkeeper Dominik Greif managed to keep out the initial effort, but the Kosovo international reacted quickly to the rebound and fired the ball into the net.
The visitors doubled their advantage only four minutes later. A corner from Mason Greenwood created the opportunity, with defender Archie Brown rising above the Lyon defence to head the ball home. Fenerbahçe therefore went into half-time with a commanding 2–0 lead and a valuable advantage in the aggregate score.
Lyon emerged from the break with a renewed sense of urgency. Playing in front of their home supporters, the French side pushed forward in search of a route back into the tie. Their efforts were rewarded in the 61st minute when Malik Fofana converted a pass from Ainsley Maitland-Niles to reduce the deficit to 2–1.
The goal transformed the atmosphere. Lyon began pressing for an equaliser, and twice appeared to have found one.
In the 64th minute, Loïs Openda put the ball into the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review. Seven minutes later, Kyle Budach also appeared to have scored, only for the goal to be disallowed after VAR determined that a foul had occurred in the build-up.
Those decisions proved crucial. Fenerbahçe survived the late pressure and managed the closing stages effectively, with no further goals scored. The 2–1 victory secured a 3–2 aggregate triumph and confirmed their return to the Champions League league phase.
For Fenerbahçe, the achievement carries considerable historical significance. Their previous appearance in the Champions League group stage came in the 2008–09 season. Since then, the club have endured a long and complicated period away from European football’s premier competition.
After winning the Turkish Süper Lig in the 2010–11 season, Fenerbahçe became embroiled in an investigation into allegations of match-fixing. The club subsequently faced UEFA sanctions and were unable to participate in European competitions for two seasons.
Fenerbahçe and former club president Aziz Yıldırım were later cleared of the allegations following a retrial. The club’s return to the Champions League now marks a major milestone after years of waiting.
The victory over Lyon also demonstrated Fenerbahçe’s resilience in a high-pressure two-legged tie. After surrendering the lead in the first match in Istanbul, they produced a disciplined performance away from home when the margin for error was minimal.
With their place in the competition secured, the Turkish side can now look forward to testing themselves against Europe’s leading clubs once again. For Fenerbahçe and their supporters, the return itself represents the culmination of an 18-year wait.
