Police Apprehend Nine During ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ in Rupnagar

In a robust display of law enforcement activity, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have detained nine individuals following an intensive sweep in the capital’s Rupnagar precinct. The raids, conducted on Thursday under the strategic banner of ‘Operation Devil Hunt Phase-2’, specifically targeted figures associated with the now-proscribed political apparatus. Most prominent among those taken into custody is Alamgir Khan, 52, the Vice-President of the Swechchhasebak League—the volunteer wing of the Awami League, which has seen its activities banned under current administrative orders.

High-Profile Targets and Judicial Processing

The operation represents a significant escalation in the DMP’s efforts to dismantle the remnants of the former ruling party’s organisational wings. Alongside the senior political leader, eight other men were apprehended in various sectors of Rupnagar. According to a formal press release signed by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, the detainees have already been processed through the metropolitan judicial system.

Alamgir Khan and his associate, Md. Odullah, were escorted to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court to face specific criminal allegations. Meanwhile, the remaining seven detainees were presented before the Special Metropolitan Magistrate Court in the Mirpur Division. These individuals face various charges under the DMP Ordinance Act, a legislative tool frequently employed by metropolitan police to address breaches of public order and illicit assembly.

The Strategic Context of the Crackdown

The moniker ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ suggests a calculated, intelligence-led approach to identifying and removing individuals suspected of orchestrating subversive activities or maintaining illegal political networks. Following the political upheavals of 2024 and 2025, the interim security framework has prioritised the neutralisation of ‘volunteer’ organisations that were previously seen as the street-level enforcement arms of the ousted administration.

Rupnagar and the wider Mirpur zone have remained flashpoints for political friction, prompting the DMP to deploy enhanced surveillance and frequent tactical raids. Law enforcement officials have indicated that this ‘Phase-2’ initiative is part of a broader city-wide strategy to ensure that banned organisations do not regroup or incite public unrest ahead of upcoming national events.
