Police have arrested six people, including five activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, in separate operations in Tongi, Gazipur. The arrests were made on Sunday (30 August) by officers from Tongi West and Tongi East police stations.
Five of the arrests were made within the jurisdiction of Tongi West Police Station. Those arrested have been identified as Md Faruk, 28, a resident of Mondal Market in the Baro Dewra area; Alamin, 31, from Jhenaigati in Sherpur; Sakibul Hossain, also known as Sakib, 19, from Maijdee in Noakhali; Shihab, 27, from Dohar in Dhaka; and Minhaj Masum, 28, from Mohanganj in Netrokona.
According to information provided by police, Faruk and Alamin were actively involved in Chhatra League politics. Sakibul Hossain was identified as a former vice-president of the Chhatra League unit in Ward 51 of Tongi, while Minhaj Masum was a member of the executive committee of the Gazipur Metropolitan Chhatra League. Police did not provide any information about whether Shihab held a formal organisational post.
Separately, police from Tongi East Police Station arrested Md Matin, 45, from the Morkun Masterpara area. Officials did not immediately disclose details of the case or allegations against him.
The arrests come amid heightened police attention to law and order in Tongi and other parts of Gazipur Metropolitan City. Law enforcement agencies have been carrying out operations aimed at preventing violence, acts of sabotage and activities that could disrupt public safety.
However, police have not publicly provided detailed information about the specific allegations or cases under which the five people arrested by Tongi West Police Station were detained. As a result, the precise nature of the allegations and the extent of the individuals’ alleged involvement will depend on the case records, investigation and subsequent court proceedings.
Tongi East Police Station officer-in-charge Maksudul Alam said cases had been filed against the arrested individuals under the applicable laws. He said arrangements were being made to produce them before a court.
Police have also warned that those involved in acts of sabotage or violence would face legal action. Investigators may examine whether others were involved in the incidents connected to the cases and take further action if sufficient evidence emerges.
The arrests also highlight the continuing scrutiny of political activists in the area amid concerns over public order. Any allegations against the detainees, however, will have to be established through the legal process.
Being arrested does not, by itself, establish guilt. The allegations must be examined through investigation and judicial proceedings, with the court ultimately determining whether the accused are responsible for the offences alleged against them.
