Two Detained Over Horrific Multi-Murder in Rangpur

Law enforcement agencies in Rangpur have detained two local youths, Siddharth and Mugdha, as suspects in the brutal killing of a former school teacher and three members of his family in the city’s Masuapara neighbourhood.

The victims—65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty, a retired teacher from Rangpur Zilla School, his 50-year-old wife Pritilata Chakraborty, their 24-year-old daughter Agami Chakraborty Parthi, and their 12-year-old son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam—were discovered lifeless inside their double-storey home on Saturday night. Local residents alerted the Kotwali police station after a foul odour began emanating from the property, signalling that the tragedy may have occurred two to three days prior to its discovery.

Upon arrival, police found the residence in a state of disarray with a disconnected electricity supply. The bodies were scattered across different levels of the house: Mr Chakraborty’s remains were recovered from the roof, those of his wife and daughter on the stairs, and his young son’s body hidden beneath a bed in a bedroom. Early Sunday morning, the bodies were transferred to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.

Investigators found valuables and furniture ransacked, pointing towards a robbery motive, though authorities have emphasised that the definitive cause and objective remain under thorough investigation. Forensic teams from the Criminal Investigation Department, alongside the Detective Branch and the Rapid Action Battalion, have thoroughly processed the crime scene for evidence.

According to intelligence and local sources, the suspects were rounded up following sweeping overnight operations. Investigators noted troubling evidence indicating that the perpetrators may have consumed narcotics inside the home following the homicides. One suspect reportedly attempted to evade capture by fleeing into a neighbouring mulberry garden operated by the Silk Development Board, before being cornered and detained near the Dokhiganj crematorium.

Mr Chakraborty had retired from teaching in December of the previous year and subsequently ran a homeopathic practice from his residence. His daughter had recently completed her master’s examinations in English at Carmichael College, while his son was enrolled as a fifth-grade student at Rangpur Zilla School. While police have not yet formally confirmed the direct involvement of the detained youths, a comprehensive briefing is expected as specialized units press forward with the manhunt and forensic analysis.
