A suspected drug dealer has been arrested in Keraniganj, Dhaka, with 200 yaba tablets, according to the Dhaka District Detective Branch (DB-South).
The man was identified as Md Rinku Islam, 35. He was arrested during an operation in the Shubhadya Westpara Shantinagar Three Roads area of South Keraniganj early on Monday (28 September).
Ashfaq Ragib Hasan, officer-in-charge of the Dhaka District DB-South, confirmed the arrest at a press briefing later that afternoon.
According to the police, the operation was conducted after investigators received confidential information about suspected drug-related activity in the area. DB personnel subsequently carried out an operation at the designated location and arrested Rinku Islam. A search following his arrest led to the recovery of 200 yaba tablets, police said.
The DB said its initial questioning indicated that Rinku had allegedly been involved in the drug trade for an extended period. Police alleged that he collected drugs from different suppliers and distributed them in various parts of Keraniganj.
The claims regarding his alleged involvement are part of the police investigation and will be subject to scrutiny through the legal process. Further investigation is expected to establish the source of the seized yaba, whether other individuals were involved in its supply and distribution, and the wider circumstances surrounding the case.
The seizure forms part of an ongoing effort by law-enforcement agencies to curb the circulation of illicit drugs in and around Dhaka. Keraniganj, located on the outskirts of the capital, has seen police operations targeting suspected drug distribution networks, although the present case concerns only the allegations and evidence identified during this particular investigation.
A case has been filed against Rinku Islam at South Keraniganj Police Station under Section 36(1), Schedule 10(a), of the Narcotics Control Act 2018. The Detective Branch is the complainant in the case.
Following his arrest, Rinku was produced before a court. Police also sought his remand for further questioning, according to the DB officer.
The requested remand is intended to assist investigators in examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged drug trade and the source of the seized tablets. Any further legal action will depend on the investigation and the court proceedings.
Under the legal process, the allegations against the arrested man remain subject to investigation and judicial consideration. An accused person is not considered guilty unless proven so in court.
