Police arrested 492 people in separate operations across the capital over a 24-hour period, while 29 cases were filed during the same period, according to information released by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Tuesday.
The arrests were made by different units of the metropolitan police as part of operations carried out across several areas of Dhaka. The figures cover arrests made by the DMP’s eight crime divisions, as well as its Detective Branch and Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit.
The Mirpur division recorded the highest number of arrests, with 106 people taken into custody. Tejgaon followed closely, with 105 arrests. The Wari division arrested 69 people, while 61 were arrested in the Motijheel division.
The Lalbagh division accounted for 45 arrests, followed by Gulshan with 42 and Uttara with 35. The Ramna division arrested 26 people. The Detective Branch arrested two people, while the CTTC unit made one arrest.
Taken together, the eight regular crime divisions accounted for 489 of the 492 arrests. The remaining three arrests were made by the Detective Branch and CTTC.
The operations also resulted in the recovery of a quantity of suspected narcotics and other items. Police recovered four kilograms of cannabis, 4,533 yaba tablets and 75 bottles of phensedyl. Eleven mobile phone handsets were also recovered, along with one victim.
The arrests and recoveries came amid continuing police operations aimed at addressing criminal activity in different parts of the capital. Such operations commonly involve searches, arrests in connection with cases and action against suspected involvement in offences, with the details of individual cases handled by the relevant police units.
The number of arrests varied considerably between the different divisions. Mirpur and Tejgaon alone accounted for 211 arrests, representing a substantial share of the total. Wari and Motijheel also recorded relatively high numbers, while the figures for Ramna, Lalbagh, Gulshan and Uttara were lower.
The recovery of more than 4,500 yaba tablets was the largest item by quantity among the narcotics seized during the operations. Cannabis and phensedyl were also recovered, indicating that the operations included action involving different types of suspected drugs.
The 29 cases filed during the same 24-hour period will be dealt with through the relevant legal procedures. Those arrested in connection with specific cases will face the next stages of investigation and judicial proceedings according to the circumstances of each case.
The DMP’s figures provide a snapshot of police activity across Dhaka during the period covered. With operations conducted by multiple divisions and specialised units, the arrests and recoveries involved a range of locations and cases across the metropolitan area.
