Feni was shaken on Wednesday evening (11 February) following the discovery of the body of Roksana Akter Lipi, 31, a leading member of the district’s Women’s unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Her lifeless body was found in a rented apartment at Khalek Mansion, located on Moksedur Rahman Road in Feni town.
Lipi, originally from Kanchim Bazar in Sonagazi Upazila, was the daughter of Abul Bashar Badsha Mia and the wife of expatriate Dulal Hossain. She served as the coordinator of the Women’s Unit in Ward 11 of Feni Municipality, actively participating in party organisation and election-related activities.
According to local and political sources, Lipi had been vigorously campaigning ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, supporting the BNP candidate who carries the “Sheaf of Paddy” symbol. Due to her political commitments, she had left her 13-year-old daughter at her maternal home for safety and care.
On Wednesday evening, family members attempted to contact her by phone but received no response. Concerned, they went to her apartment and found the main door locked from the inside. Peering through a neighbouring window, they saw Lipi hanging from a ceiling fan by a scarf in the bedroom.
Authorities, including police and the fire service, forced entry and recovered her body, which was then taken to Feni General Hospital morgue for examination.
Speaking to reporters, Lipi’s younger sister, Pinky, said: “I moved out five days ago. With her husband abroad, there was no conflict at home. We cannot understand why she would take such a step.”
Nura Tanzila, organisational secretary of the district Women’s Unit, said: “I witnessed Lipi’s political rise closely. We last spoke on 9 February during election campaigning. Whether this was suicide or foul play is not yet clear. Her mobile phone may provide crucial evidence. We hope the authorities conduct a thorough investigation.”
Feni Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Golam Mostafa added: “The main door was locked from inside. She was found hanging, with her right hand fingers near her neck, suggesting she may have struggled to free herself. Her mobile phone has been seized. Preliminary findings point to suicide, but investigations will reveal the exact circumstances.”
