Dhaka DB Arrests Two Drug Dealers With 100 Yaba Tablets

In a targeted anti-narcotics operation in Ashulia, Savar, the Dhaka District North Detective Branch (DB) has apprehended two professional drug traffickers in possession of 100 Yaba tablets. According to police sources, the suspects have been involved for an extended period in supplying and distributing illegal substances in the outskirts of the capital.

The arrests were confirmed on Monday, 16 February, by Inspector Md. Saidul Islam of the Dhaka District North DB, who stated in a press release that the operation was conducted under the supervision of the Dhaka District Police Superintendent. Acting on a tip-off, officers raided a specific location in the Palli Bidyut area of Ashulia, where the suspects were apprehended and the narcotics seized.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Md. Rezzakul Habib Manik, 38, son of the late Abdul Latif from Khoragacha Purbo Para (Paikpara), Mithapukur, Rangpur, and Md. Mamunur Rashid Mamun, 30, son of Nuruzzaman from Tikani Mondolpara (Tekani Schoolpara), Mithapukur, Rangpur. Police reports indicate that both were involved in wholesale and retail distribution of Yaba in Savar and Ashulia.

According to DB sources, both suspects have prior criminal records. Manik faces five pending cases, while Mamun is involved in three ongoing cases, most of which were filed under the Narcotics Control Act.

Inspector Md. Saidul Islam emphasised that recent trends show a concerning rise in Yaba use and distribution within Savar–Ashulia industrial and residential areas. The densely populated industrial zones attract workers and young individuals from across districts, making them vulnerable targets for drug networks. Despite regular police operations, traffickers continue to adapt their methods to evade detection.

“The zero-tolerance policy against narcotics remains firm,” Inspector Islam said. “Legal proceedings have been initiated against the arrested individuals, and preparations are underway to present them in court. Investigations continue to identify other collaborators linked to their network.”

Experts argue that combating Yaba trafficking requires more than law enforcement alone. Raising public awareness, encouraging family supervision, and providing youth with alternative employment and positive recreational activities are equally vital. Without these measures, drug networks quickly recruit new members and resume operations.

Law enforcement authorities have pledged to intensify anti-drug initiatives in Savar and Ashulia and urged the local community to report any suspicious activities promptly.
