Bangladesh Confirms June Start for HSC Exams

The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations in Bangladesh are scheduled to begin on 7 June this year, according to confirmation issued on Monday evening (30 March) by Education Adviser Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon. The announcement is expected to bring an end to weeks of uncertainty among hundreds of thousands of students awaiting the official examination timetable.

Officials within the Ministry of Education confirmed that the proposed schedule was discussed during a high-level meeting held on Sunday (29 March) at the Secondary and Higher Education Division conference room. The meeting brought together chairpersons of all education boards across the country to review academic planning, administrative preparedness, and the broader national examination calendar.

During the discussions, a preliminary consensus was reached to commence the examinations on 7 June, subject to final government approval. A board chairman who attended the meeting stated that the date was determined under the direct guidance of the Education Adviser, with the understanding that formal endorsement would follow shortly. Once approved, the complete examination routine is expected to be released without delay.

Major reform: unified question papers across all boards

This year’s HSC examinations will introduce a landmark reform in Bangladesh’s public assessment system. For the first time, all 11 education boards—including the nine general education boards—will conduct examinations using a single, unified set of question papers.

Previously, while the Madrasah Education Board and the Technical Education Board already followed standardised examination frameworks, the general education boards operated independently with separate question papers. The adoption of a unified question system across all boards therefore represents a significant policy shift aimed at standardisation.

Education authorities have described the reform as an important step towards improving the consistency and integrity of the national examination system. By ensuring that all candidates sit for the same question papers, officials believe the move will strengthen fairness in evaluation and reduce long-standing disparities in academic outcomes between different boards.

Anticipated impact on fairness and transparency

Ministry officials have expressed optimism that the introduction of a common question paper will help establish a more balanced assessment structure nationwide. Standardisation is expected to reduce variations in difficulty levels, marking schemes, and question-setting styles, which have historically contributed to differences in results across regions.

Education analysts argue that the reform could also enhance public trust in the examination process, particularly at a time when HSC results play a crucial role in determining admission to higher education institutions. A more uniform system, they suggest, may help ensure that academic performance is measured more equitably across all districts.

Routine publication expected shortly

Following final approval from the Ministry of Education, the detailed examination schedule is expected to be published within the week. Education boards are likely to release the full routine simultaneously on their official websites, allowing students, parents, and institutions to prepare in advance for the examination period.
