Two four-year-old twin brothers lost their lives after being struck by a local train in a tragic accident in southern Bangladesh, plunging their family and the wider community into deep mourning.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the area of the Bhusna–Lakshmandia railway station in Noapara Union under Madhukhali Upazila of Faridpur District. According to local authorities, the children were hit by a passenger train travelling from Rajbari towards Bhatiapara while playing near the railway tracks.
The deceased have been identified as Taieb Sheikh and Ahmed Sheikh, both aged four. They were the sons of a local businessman, Akash Sheikh. Family sources said the twins had been visiting their paternal uncle’s home, which is located close to the railway line, at the time of the incident.
Police and eyewitness accounts indicate that the accident took place shortly after midday. The children were reportedly playing unsupervised near the tracks when the approaching train failed to stop in time. Emergency responders and railway police rushed to the scene after being alerted, but both children were declared dead on arrival due to severe injuries.
Officer-in-Charge Fakir Md. Tajur Rahman of Madhukhali Police Station confirmed the incident, stating that he personally visited the site following the report. He noted that although the family home is situated approximately 400 to 500 metres away from the railway line, the children had been staying at their uncle’s residence nearby, which gave them easier access to the tracks.
Railway police have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Authorities are expected to review safety measures in the area, particularly concerning residential proximity to active railway lines and the absence of adequate protective barriers.
Local residents expressed shock and grief over the loss, describing the incident as both heartbreaking and preventable. The deaths of the twin brothers have reignited concerns about railway safety in densely populated rural areas where tracks often run close to homes and play spaces.
