Indian Cricket Dispute Turns Fatal as Umpire Killed

A local cricket match in the Indian city of Visakhapatnam turned into a tragic scene of violence after a dispute over a run-out decision escalated into a deadly stabbing, leaving one umpire dead and several others injured.

The incident occurred during a community-level match on Sunday, where two officials—Dola Ajit Babu and his friend Budumuri Chiranjeevi—were officiating a game between two local sides. What began as a routine disagreement over a run-out call quickly spiralled into a confrontation involving players and spectators.

According to police in Visakhapatnam, tensions escalated after a spectator identified as Kanta Kishore allegedly began verbally abusing players, officials, and others present at the ground. The situation deteriorated further when the spectator reportedly summoned the two umpires in an attempt to resolve the dispute.

As Ajit Babu and Chiranjeevi approached the individual along with several players and bystanders, the confrontation suddenly turned violent. Police said Kanta Kishore allegedly pulled out a knife and attacked Ajit Babu in full public view. In an attempt to intervene and restrain the attacker, Chiranjeevi and another spectator were also injured.

Despite efforts by those present to stop the assault, Ajit Babu sustained critical injuries. He was immediately taken to a nearby private hospital along with the injured spectator, but doctors later declared him dead on arrival.

The deceased umpire’s father, Dola Appala Raju, has filed a formal complaint at the local police station, prompting an official investigation into the incident. Authorities have registered a case and launched a manhunt for the accused, who reportedly fled the scene immediately after the attack.

Police officials in Visakhapatnam confirmed that efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the suspect, who remains absconding. Investigators are also questioning witnesses and reviewing accounts from players and spectators present at the ground to reconstruct the sequence of events.
