Worker Dies in Kishoreganj Gate Collapse

A worker has died and three others have been injured following the collapse of a construction gate at the BSCIC industrial estate in Kishoreganj.

The incident occurred on Sunday at around 6:30 pm at the main gate of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) industrial area located in Maria Union under Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila. According to accounts from local residents and emergency responders, construction work was ongoing at the site when the accident took place.

The deceased has been identified as Russell Mia (25), son of Manik Mia of Sholomaria village in Sadar Upazila. He was working as a mason at the site at the time of the incident. Following the collapse, he was transported to Kishoreganj Sadar General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead during treatment.

Three other workers sustained injuries in the incident. They are Hasan Mia (22), son of Dulal Mia of Sholomaria village; Ali Swapon (35), son of the late Abdul Razzak of Maria village; and Rana Mia (26), son of the late Golam Mostafa of Matikata village under Noabad Union in Karimganj Upazila. The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.

Fire Service and Civil Defence officials confirmed that a rescue operation was launched shortly after receiving information about the incident. Kishoreganj Fire Service Station Officer Abdullah Khalid stated that a fire service unit was deployed immediately and carried out rescue operations at the site. Local residents also assisted in the initial rescue efforts before the injured were transported to hospital.

According to eyewitness accounts from Maria area resident Akkas Ali, approximately 15 to 20 workers were engaged in construction work on the main gate of the BSCIC industrial estate at the time of the incident. He further stated that after rainfall in the afternoon, work continued with the casting of the gate roof. During this process, the centering structure reportedly weakened and was unable to bear the load, leading to a sudden collapse of the structure.

The BSCIC industrial estate is a government-established industrial zone designed to support small and cottage industries, and construction work on infrastructure such as entry gates is part of its ongoing development and maintenance activities.

Victims and Injuries

Authorities have not yet issued further details regarding the structural condition of the construction site or whether any formal inquiry has been initiated into the cause of the collapse. The injured remain under medical supervision at Kishoreganj Sadar General Hospital.
