Two Bangladeshis Killed at Border

Two Bangladeshi nationals, including a college student, were killed in an incident involving gunfire by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) at the Kasba border area in Brahmanbaria district. The incident occurred at around 11:05 pm on Friday in the Dhajanagar–Pathariadwar area inside Indian territory.

The matter was confirmed on Saturday morning through a press release issued by the 60 Battalion of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), based in Sultanpur, Brahmanbaria. The information was also verified by the battalion commander, Lieutenant Colonel SM Shariful Islam.

According to the BGB statement, one of the deceased was Md Mursalin (20), son of Hebju Mia from Batainbari village under Dhajanagar in Gopinathpur Union of Kasba upazila. Local sources reported that he was a second-year Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) student at Alhaj Shah Alam Degree College in Gopinathpur. The second deceased was identified as Nobi Hossain of Madhupur village under the same union.

Family members of Mursalin stated that he was taken from his home by several local individuals on Friday night and brought to the border area. They further said that upon reaching the Indian side, BSF personnel opened fire during a patrol operation, resulting in his death. His body was later taken into Indian custody by the BSF.

The BGB press release stated that, based on intelligence information, approximately 15 Bangladeshi individuals allegedly involved in smuggling crossed about 200 yards into Indian territory in the Dhajanagar–Pathariadwar area around 11 pm on Friday. They reportedly entered with the assistance of Indian counterparts for smuggling activities.

When the group was returning with smuggled goods, they were intercepted by a patrol team of BSF’s 49 Battalion stationed at the Pathariadwar camp. At that point, tensions escalated as the Bangladeshi individuals allegedly confronted the BSF personnel, leading to a physical altercation and scuffle between the two sides.

During the confrontation, BSF personnel reportedly fired two rounds of pellet (shotgun) ammunition targeting the group. Md Mursalin and Nobi Hossain were injured in the incident. They were later taken to a hospital inside India, where they were declared dead while undergoing treatment, as confirmed by the BSF to the BGB.

The BGB further stated that communication has been established with the BSF regarding the repatriation of the bodies of the two deceased individuals. A formal protest letter is being prepared and a flag meeting between the two border forces is also in process.

Kasba Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) M Shamimul Islam confirmed that the bodies of the deceased are currently in the custody of the BSF. He added that BGB personnel are working to bring the bodies back to Bangladesh as part of ongoing procedures.
