Most Haiti World Cup Players Born Abroad

Haiti has officially announced its final 26-man squad for the upcoming football World Cup. Marking the nation’s return to the global tournament for the first time since 1974, the composition of the squad reveals a notable demographic trend. More than half of the selected players were born outside Haiti, predominantly in France, alongside others born in the United States, Canada, and Switzerland.

Furthermore, out of the 26 selected squad members, 25 are currently signed with foreign football clubs. Only a single player from the entire roster actively competes within the domestic Haitian football league system.

Squad Demographics and Birthplace Analysis

An examination of the player registry released by Haiti’s head coach, Sébastien Migné, indicates that only 10 members of the 26-man squad were actually born in Haiti. The remaining 16 footballers were born abroad, with the vast majority traceing their births to France.

Specifically, 12 players were born in France, two in the United States, one in Canada, and one in Switzerland. These foreign-born athletes secured their Haitian citizenship through ancestral eligibility, namely via their parents or grandparents. The majority of these expatriate players had already made their senior international debuts for Haiti prior to the World Cup selection.

Club Representation and Key Roster Figures

While the squad features players scattered across various European leagues—including France, England, and Portugal—21-year-old midfielder Woodensky Pierre stands out as the sole representative from a domestic Haitian club. He currently plays for the local side Violette AC.

The squad features several notable individuals operating in prominent European divisions. Key figures anchoring the team include forward Wilson Isidor, who plays for English Championship side Sunderland; midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, who plays for Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves); and defender Kito Thermoncy, who plays for the Swiss club Young Boys.

Tournament Grouping and Schedule

Haiti has been drawn into Group C for the tournament group stage, where they will face Brazil, Morocco, and Scotland. The Caribbean nation will commence their World Cup campaign with an opening fixture against Scotland on 13 June.
