A 15-year-old boy was killed after being struck by an unidentified vehicle on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in Mirsharai উপজেলার Jorarganj area on Monday morning, in yet another fatal road accident on one of Bangladesh’s busiest transport corridors.
The deceased, identified as Shahin Alam, was the son of Abul Hossain and a resident of Purba Raipur village under Durgapur Union in Mirsharai. Family members said Shahin was well known in his local community and was deeply cherished by relatives and neighbours. His sudden death has left the family in mourning.
According to highway police, the incident occurred near the Sonapahar area along the Chattogram-bound section of the highway. A patrol team from Jorarganj Highway Police was on duty nearby when officers received an alert through the national emergency helpline 999 regarding a serious road collision.
Police officers rushed to the scene shortly after receiving the report and found Shahin critically injured on the roadside. He was immediately rescued and taken to Mastannagar Hospital, part of Mirsharai উপজেলা Health Complex, for emergency treatment.
Despite efforts by attending doctors, Shahin later died while undergoing treatment.
Officials said the vehicle responsible for the collision fled the scene immediately after the crash, preventing witnesses and law enforcement from identifying its type or registration details. Authorities have since launched an investigation to trace both the vehicle and its driver.
Officer-in-Charge Sharifuzzaman Bhuiyan of Jorarganj Highway Police Station confirmed that police responded promptly after receiving the emergency notification.
“We received the information through the national emergency service and sent officers to the scene immediately. The injured teenager was rescued and taken to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The vehicle involved remains unidentified, and legal procedures are underway,” he said.
The Dhaka–Chattogram Highway is considered one of the most important and heavily trafficked roads in Bangladesh, connecting the capital with the country’s principal seaport city. Thousands of passenger coaches, freight trucks, and private vehicles use the route daily, contributing to frequent traffic congestion and a heightened risk of accidents.
Road safety analysts have repeatedly highlighted speeding, reckless overtaking, inadequate pedestrian crossings, and the tendency of drivers involved in collisions to flee as major contributors to highway fatalities.
Experts argue that reducing accidents on this route will require stricter speed enforcement, wider CCTV coverage, improved surveillance, quicker emergency response mechanisms, and safer pedestrian infrastructure, particularly in densely populated roadside areas.
