Tensions along Bangladesh’s northern frontier escalated sharply on Tuesday afternoon after personnel from the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) unlawfully crossed the international boundary into Bangladeshi territory and attacked local agricultural workers, sparking a civilian-led confrontation that forced the patrol to retreat and abandon their equipment. The incident took place at approximately 4:30 pm near Main Pillar 907 within the Banchowki-Amjhol border zone, situated in Gotamari Union under Hatibandha Upazila of Lalmonirhat district.
Accounts provided by border residents and confirmed by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) sources indicate that several local farmers were routinely cultivating their land near the Amjhol frontier when an armed BSF patrol crossed into Bangladeshi soil. Without any prior provocation, the Indian guards initiated a physical assault on the unsuspecting farmers. Alarmed by the commotion and emergency calls for help, residents from nearby villages mobilized rapidly, converging on the agricultural plots to protect their fellow citizens.
The encounter quickly deteriorated into a violent brawl between the assembled Bangladeshi villagers and the intruding BSF personnel. Facing an increasingly assertive and numerically superior crowd of local residents, the Indian patrol retreated back across the border line into Indian territory. In the chaos of their exit, the fleeing BSF guards abandoned two shotguns and a walkie-talkie transceiver on Bangladeshi soil.
Two Bangladeshi farmers suffered injuries during the initial physical assault by the Indian border personnel. Officials from the BGB confirmed that both individuals received immediate primary medical attention following the altercation and are currently recovering.
Alerted to the crisis by local villagers, BGB personnel stationed at the Banchowki border outpost arrived at the scene. The border guards secured the perimeter, confiscated the two discarded shotguns alongside the communication equipment, and transferred all items into official military custody for documentation.
Lieutenant Colonel Mehdi Imam, Commanding Officer of BGB Battalion-15, visited the location shortly after the incident to review the security situation, examine the seized arms, and reassure the local population. He verified that formal diplomatic and military channels had been activated to address the unprovoked cross-border intrusion and subsequent physical violence.
The BGB has formally requested an urgent battalion commander-level flag meeting with their BSF counterparts. The Bangladeshi command intends to lodge a stern protest regarding the illegal entry of foreign armed troops onto national territory and establish protocol for handling the seized weapons and communication gear.
