A violent clash over a long-standing land dispute in a village under newly formed Mokamtola Upazila has left two cousins dead, triggering tension and heightened security across the locality.
The incident occurred at around 8:30 a.m. on Monday in Laxmikola village, where members of two branches of an extended family confronted each other over ownership of a small plot of land measuring approximately three decimals. What began as a verbal altercation quickly escalated into a brutal attack involving sharp weapons, according to police and local witnesses.
The deceased have been identified as Yasin Ali (33), son of Jamil Uddin of Laxmipur village, and Suman Molla (35), son of Mofazzal Hossain Molla, both of whom were closely related as cousins. Authorities report that the dispute over the land had persisted for years, despite repeated attempts by family elders and local mediators to reach an amicable settlement.
Eyewitnesses said tensions flared when both sides gathered at the disputed site to assert control. Heated exchanges soon gave way to violence, and several individuals allegedly armed with sharp-edged weapons attacked the victims. Yasin Ali died on the spot due to severe injuries, while critically wounded Suman Molla was rushed to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Following the incident, panic spread throughout the village, prompting local residents to alert law enforcement. Additional police personnel were deployed to the area to prevent further unrest and maintain order. Officers also recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination.
Officials from Shibganj Police Station confirmed that the violence stemmed directly from the ongoing land dispute. A suspect identified as Rahat has been detained in connection with the killings, while operations are underway to apprehend others allegedly involved.
Police further stated that a formal case will be filed once a written complaint is received from the victims’ families. Investigators are also examining whether the attack was premeditated and are questioning local residents to reconstruct the sequence of events.
