Stabbing Over Exam Cheating Dispute

In a disturbing incident following the final day of the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations in Mirsharai Upazila, two students were allegedly stabbed over a dispute linked to sharing answer scripts inside the examination hall. Police have detained four teenage suspects in connection with the attack, which has sparked widespread concern among residents and education stakeholders.

The incident occurred on Sunday around 1:30 p.m. in front of Baraiyarhat Degree College in the Baraiyarhat area, immediately after the completion of the science examination. According to eyewitness accounts and police sources, tensions began inside the examination centre when several students from Korerhat Kamini Majumdar High School reportedly requested answer assistance from two fellow candidates of Baraiyarhat Municipal Multipurpose High School. The two students refused to share their answer scripts.

This refusal is alleged to have triggered a premeditated retaliation. As the students were leaving the centre, a group of approximately 10 to 12 individuals surrounded the two victims and attacked them with sharp weapons, leaving them seriously injured. Local bystanders and other students quickly intervened and transported the injured victims to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Following a written complaint filed by the father of one of the injured students, law enforcement agencies launched an immediate investigation. Overnight operations led to the arrest of four suspects from the Korerhat market area early Monday morning. Police confirmed that the detainees are all minors and are believed to have been directly involved in the assault.

A senior officer from Jorarganj Police Station stated that legal proceedings have been initiated and the accused have been sent to court under relevant sections of the law. Investigators are also working to identify additional suspects believed to have participated in the group attack.

Local residents have expressed alarm over the incident, noting that competitive pressure during public examinations has increasingly contributed to anxiety and friction among students. Many believe that the escalation from a classroom disagreement to violent assault reflects a worrying breakdown in discipline and supervision.

Educationists and guardians have strongly condemned the attack, calling it both tragic and unacceptable. They have urged authorities to enforce stricter monitoring at examination centres, improve student counselling, and strengthen moral and civic education in schools to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The atmosphere in the area remains tense as police continue to maintain heightened surveillance. Authorities have assured that further action will be taken if additional individuals are found to be involved in the attack.
