Brahmanbaria Union Parishad Chairman Arrested Over Pending Warrants

Law enforcement personnel have detained Zakir Hossain, the chairman of the Barail Union Parishad in the Nabinagar Upazila of Brahmanbaria. The arrest took place on Sunday afternoon during a targeted police operation directly within the Barail village area. Beyond his official capacity as an elected local government representative, Hossain holds a prominent political position as the president of the Barail Union branch of the Bangladesh Awami League, an organisation currently facing administrative bans and restrictions.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Morshedul Alam Chowdhury of Nabinagar Police Station formally confirmed the details of the arrest to media representatives. According to the police official, multiple criminal cases have been filed against the local chairman in connection with past local disturbances and political clashes. Among these ongoing legal proceedings, a specific case carried an active arrest warrant issued by the local court system. Acting on this official warrant, a team of police officers tracked his movements and successfully intercepted him in his native village on Sunday afternoon.
The detention has generated significant discussion across the local community and the wider political landscape of Brahmanbaria. Investigators noted that due to his influential local standing, executing warrants and pursuing legal accountability can occasionally present procedural challenges, but standard judicial protocols are now being strictly enforced.
Police authorities have confirmed that following the initial apprehension, all mandatory legal procedures are being finalised. Zakir Hossain will be produced before the local court on Monday, where judicial magistrates will review the pending warrants and determine subsequent legal steps regarding his custody. Meanwhile, security and monitoring remain heightened across the Nabinagar Upazila to maintain public peace and ensure smooth judicial proceedings.
